Climbing higher into the National Park along windy mountain roads you will come accross Sotres, a small mountain village. There are a handful of restaurants, bars and gift shops. Continuing up the road into the lunar landscape you will find Tresviso at 1026m altitude.
Ten minutes drive away is the town of Arenas where you can find most things including banks, supermarkets, restaurants and a petrol station. It gets quite lively here in the summer and is the main base for visitors visiting the Picos mountains. Set in the bowl of the Cabrales valley it can also be reached on foot from the house following an old path that runs parallel to the Casaño river.
The funicular railway from Poncebos to Bulnes is a fantastic activity for all the family. This underground railway takes you up to the small hamlet of Bulnes where there are still no cars but plenty of cafe's and restaurants to while away the time. There are also many walking routes starting here, both gentle and more strenuous.
